Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca, ca. 1500 CE. According to the scholarship of Elena Phipps, this bag was probably created by the royal Inca weavers. Bags such as this example were used to store coca leaves and have been discovered in sacred offering sites of the Andes. Characteristic of Inca textiles, we see symmetrically arranged woven stripes in shades of red, brown, taupe, yellow ochre, and cream created with tightly packed weft-faced plain weave. According to Phipps, telltale evidence of the Inca weaving method are the preserved chained warp selvage, favored only by Inca master weavers. The strap, in contrast, features diamond designs in dark brown, beige, and cream woven in an intricate warp pattern. This is the same technique and design used to create special ceremonial belts. Mounted to museum quality beige linen. 22"H x 7-3/4"W
