Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Olmec period, Tlatilco people, Tlapacoya site, ca. 1250 to 800 BCE. A wonderful Olmecoid Tlapacoya terracotta head, skillfully modeled with mesmerizing traits. The characteristically elongated form presents wide almond shaped eyes with recessed openings that perhaps once held inlays, arched brows, a pointy slightly upturned nose with delineated nostrils, an open mouth with downturned lips and a dimple-like depression at the right proper corner (loss to the left side of the face but probably had this depression at that corner of the mouth as well), jowly cheeks, a rounded chin, tab-shaped ears, a large forehead, and a headband presenting a texture akin to snake skin. Size: 1.8" W x 3.4" H (4.6 cm x 8.6 cm); 5.7" H (14.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private Florida, USA collection; Virginia, USA private collection, acquired in 1960's
