Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast of Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 400 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel depicting a figure holding a ritual bloodletter/piercer and a ceremonial tumi. The wide-eyed countenance peers forward from behind a prominent nose, with full lips in a concerning grin below, and a knotted headband, all above an orange-collared tunic. Along the verso is an abstract creature, perhaps a severed human head with a serpentine beard. Size: 5" L x 4.7" W x 6.1" H (12.7 cm x 11.9 cm x 15.5 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Eastern Michigan University professor's collection, Ypsilanti, Michigan, USA, acquired from the 1990s to 2010
