Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche II, ca. 300 to 400 CE. This elegant vessel portrays a spotted duck, skillfully modeled and decorated with a bichrome red and cream finish and textured wings and tailfeathers. Moche artists favored imagery of water birds, fish, and reeds. Surface-feeding or river ducks are indigenous to both North and South America. Ducks like the one depicted here inhabited swamps and tule reeds, the same reeds that the Moche used to build rafts, on the North Coast of Peru. You can imagine that marshes and rivers running through the predominantly desert terrain were treasured by the Moche as an important source of food and water. The form of this particular example ignites one's imagination. Can't you envision this magnificent avian creature gliding along the wetlands? Size: 6.75" L x 3.75" W x 5.75" H (17.1 cm x 9.5 cm x 14.6 cm)
