Description:

Rome, Imperial, ca. 1st Century CE. A fine cast leaded bronze foot formed using the lost wax (cire perdue) process around a pottery core. The right foot has a broad form that lays flat with a slight arch in the center, a wide heel, and lengthy phalanges with intricately detailed toe nails. Note how the second toe is longer than the first, a quality named the "Greek foot", which was idealized in Greek sculpture and continued to be the aesthetic standard through Roman art and up to the Modern era (as seen in the Statue of Liberty). Layers of brown and dark-green patina envelop the entire foot and imbue it with an elegant presentation evocative of ancient Rome. Size: 1.875" L x 0.875" W x 1" H (4.8 cm x 2.2 cm x 2.5 cm)

Provenance: ex Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan USA acquired before 2000
