Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan, ca. 500 BCE to 100 CE. A hand-built pottery female figure standing atop delineated legs and boasting wide hips, attenuated arms hanging from broad shoulders, and a slender waist. Her enlarged head boasts impressed ovoid eyes, a petite nose, full lips, segmented bangs along her temples, and spool-adorned ears, all beneath a tall headdress with a dramatically curled ornament decorating the front. Faint traces of original red-orange slip are visible across the composition. Size: 2" W x 5.4" H (5.1 cm x 13.7 cm); 6.375" H (16.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple large pieces, with small chips, light resurfacing, and overpainting along break lines. Light abrasions to legs, body, arms, and head, with softening to some finer details, fading to original pigmentation, and light encrustations. Light earthen deposits and traces of original pigmentation as well as great root marks throughout.
