Description:

**Originally listed at 600**

Pre-Columbian, Guerrero, Mexico, Mezcala style, ca. 300 BCE. This is a carved grayish-green stone of a standing anthropomorphic figure with deep cuts to delineate head, torso, and legs. The figure's triangular face features a wide flat nose, pointed head, and circular drilled eyes. The shoulders and legs have been carved deeply using string. This piece would have been made from a cobble and smoothed using sandstone. Stone figures and masks are nearly all that we know of the Mezcala; we believe that they were probably meant to represent the dead or their spirits. Their geometric forms and use of planes to create human shapes out of a minimum of lines have been inspirational to modern artists. Size: 1.75" W x 5.3" H (4.4 cm x 13.5 cm)
