Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Jaina/Campeche, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. This is a fantastical mold-made pottery whistle in the form of a standing deity with animalistic features. The standing figure has thick and dramatically arched feet that supports a barrel shaped stomach and arms resting to the sides. The head has large headdress panels or bat-like ears protruding to the sides, and applied forehead discs. The face has intense circular eyes and bared teeth with a lengthy forked tongue dangling to the chest. The figure is dressed in a tunic with arm bands and ear spools, perhaps representing the fearsome Maya god, Camazotz, the "death bat," associated with night, death, and human sacrifice. On the rear is a short mouthpiece and sound hole- which functions- emitting a deep sound. Figural whistles like these have been found archaeologically in household contexts, representing a souvenir from visiting a holy site. Size: 3.75" L x 2.5" W x 6.5" H (9.5 cm x 6.4 cm x 16.5 cm)
