Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-carved greenstone pendant boasting verdant hues and expert stylization. Decorating the obverse is an elaborately incised visage that faces to the right with the neckline and back of the head dominated by a headdress formed from a tapir head. A beaded necklace suggests this was an individual of wealth and status, and several biconically drilled holes show how it was suspended when worn. Baird's tapir was the largest animal in Mayan territory and could weigh up to 650 pounds! The Maya associated the animal, which is nocturnal, with the underworld, sexual potency, and fertility. Size: 1.3" W x 2.1" H (3.3 cm x 5.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010
