Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Campeche region, Maya culture, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 950 CE. An important pottery bowl displaying a circular base, bulbous body, and annular rim. The body of this lovely vessel is skillfully carved with 2 rectangular relief panels of 2 snakes. One snake is shown in the company of a seated male figure, perhaps a lord or an aristocrat based on his dignified presentation, and the other of which with the figure of a man within its jaws. The fine decorations of the carved scenes are adorned with areas of bright red cinnabar that stand out against the brown, orange, and burnt sienna hues of the pottery itself. Size: 5.4" Diameter x 4.125" H (13.7 cm x 10.5 cm)

- Condition: Repaired from 4 large pieces, with one small area of restoration along rim, and resurfacing with light adhesive residue along new material and break lines; light overpainting along exterior of restored area. Abrasions and minor nicks to base, walls, rim, and carved motifs, with softening to some finer details, and light fading to original cinnabar pigment. Wonderful preservation to carved motifs.
