Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery jar featuring a compressed circular body with broad vertical ribs that resemble a gourd. The conical foot has several base perforations that enable sound to escape from the jostled rattle balls within, and both the foot and flared rim exhibit a deep crimson color. Size: 7.2" W x 6.8" H (18.3 cm x 17.3 cm)

  • Condition: Abrasions and nicks to foot, body, and rim, with encrustations across interior and exterior surfaces, and minor fading to pigment, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits and remains of pigment throughout. Rattle balls create a pleasing sound when jostled.
