Description:

Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A gorgeous example of a cast-bronze short sword formed via the lost wax (cire perdue) technique. The stocky, double-edged blade presents with a tapering profile, a thick midrib running from tip to tang, and a pointed tip that excelled in thrusting or stabbing attacks. The flared hand guard bears a pair of sphere-tipped prongs that flank the blade base, and the ringed handle is capped with an elaborate penannular pommel bearing a central bifurcation groove. Luristani swords with minimalist designs were produced in massive numbers, meaning examples like this sword were more labor-intensive - and therefore more expensive - to create. Beautiful brown and green patina has formed across this attractive example of ancient Near Eastern weaponry! Size: 2.65" W x 21" H (6.7 cm x 53.3 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA collection, acquired by descent and moved from Germany in 1997; ex-private Hamburg, Germany collection, collected in the 1970s
