Description:

Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A great example of a cast-bronze short sword blade that would have graced the battlefields of the ancient Near East. The blade portion is of a straight, uniform design and has a shallow midrib stemming from the shoulder and bisecting the sharpened edges until terminating just prior to reaching the pointed tip. A narrow tang projects from the opposite end with a gradually tapering profile meant to accommodate a hilt shaped from wood, bone, or stone. Short swords like this example were much more efficient to produce since they required less materials and were able to be wielded by even the lowest-ranking soldiers without any training at all. Size: 23.2" L x 1.6" W (58.9 cm x 4.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000
