Description:

Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A beautiful mace head of a devastating design that is cast from bronze via the lost wax (cire perdue) technique. The spherical striking head is festooned with several diamond-shaped protrusions to maximize damage efficiency, and the cylindrical socketing shaft terminates with a pair of thick rings; the lower ring bears a petite strap loop. Bronze Age Luristan weaponry was created in small batches by nomadic herdsmen who required portability and strength in their armaments. Mace heads like this example and other bronze weaponry were entombed with their owners in small rocky graves upon their death. A wonderful mace head covered in brown, green and russet patina as well as scattered areas of azurite patina. Size: 1.9" W x 4.1" H (4.8 cm x 10.4 cm); 7.1" H (18 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Zaveloff collection, Lakewood, New Jersey, USA, acquired from Venus Gallery, Israel, in 2002
