Description:

Oceania, Fiji Islands, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely tropical hardwood head rest or neck rest with a warm red-brown hue. It is composed of three pieces - two identical arched legs and a sweeping curved platform. The three are held together by finely woven sennit fiber wrapped around the top of the legs and expertly fitted into the underside. Head/neck rests are some of the few pieces of furniture found in traditional Polynesian homes and as such they are often, as this example, elegantly carved. Size: 19.5" L x 4.8" W x 4.35" H (49.5 cm x 12.2 cm x 11 cm)

See a similar example at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1978.412.772).
