Description:

Oceania, Melanesia, Fiji or Solomon Islands, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden food hook for suspending baskets from, storing and protecting food or valuables from pests and the wet ground. These hooks were suspended from the roof or rafter beam via rope through the suspension hole. Often these hooks are decorated with ancestor spirits or clan symbols that the household could commune with, and it was believed the spirits that inhabited the hooks also protected the food and slowed spoilage. The rhomboid center is reminiscent of throwing / war clubs and paddles from the region. Size: 20" L x 4" W (50.8 cm x 10.2 cm); 20" H (50.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii collection, acquired 2000 to 2010
