Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A large and finely-detailed seated pottery male musician holding a large flute or ocarina with white-hued geometric motifs. He sits upon bent legs with stylized toes, has both arms bent to his lap, and holds the instrument in stylized fingers. He displays a dot-form sash over a thick abdomen, has miscellaneous painted circular embellishments on rounded shoulders, and a beaded necklace draped across his thick neck. The figure's visage displays characteristic sheepface qualities such as an angled nose, pointed ears with large earspools, a thin and amusing smile, and coffee-bean-shaped eyes. A thinly-striped headband with an upturned crest rests upon a tall forehead, and two circular roundels grace either lateral side of the headwear. Covered in a lustrous red pigment with creamy white details, this figure is an exceptional example of figural shaft-tomb pottery! Size: 8.625" H (21.9 cm).
