Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca culture, ca. 1500 CE. Bags such as this example were used by the Inca to store coca leaves and have been discovered in sacred offering sites of the Andes. Characteristic of Inca textiles, we see symmetrically arranged woven stripes in shades of deep orange, olive green, beige, and black created with tightly packed weft-faced plain weave, the selvage resolving in two plaited ties at diagonally opposite corners of the piece. Bag is mounted on black, museum-quality linen and bag measures 16-3/4" (42.75 cm) x 16-1/4" (41.5 cm). Provenance: Ex-private Hawaii collection; Ex-Artemis Gallery; Ex-Mitchell private collection, WA, acquired in 1970s.
