Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Huari/Wari, ca. 500 to 800 CE. A very impressive polychrome stirrup vessel, the body of a circular form with an open center - akin to a wheel or donut shape - with both faces of its round hollow centers adorned by a central openwork design comprised of a sun-like motif with many pointed sunrays upon a polygonal blanket-like form. Surrounding this is a stylized wave or cloud patterned border. Adorning the sides is a motif comprised of four avian heads with prominent beaks and wattles emerging from the same body with upper and lower textile-inspired decorative borders. The Huari or Wari culture began to develop during the late Moche era. Centered on a capital to the south of Moche territory in the central highlands of Peru, Huari civilization rose as the Mochica civilization fell apart and before the Chimu asserted themselves on the north coast. They had extensive contact with other regions in the Andes, most notably the Tiahuanaco in present-day Bolivia, and the Nazca and the Pachacamac on the south and central coast of Peru. Hence there is no homogenous Huari style. Instead we see a wide range of visual expressions in their wood carvings and ceramics.

- Condition: Probe hole on the underside of the base. Chips to the rim of the base. Painted designs are stronger in some areas than others suggesting areas of repainting.
