Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Wari (Huari) culture, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A beautiful slit-weave textile panel, comprised of tightly-woven natural cotton fibers in hues of wheat, beige, crimson, and cream, and formed from 5 attached fragments, each containing a highly-stylized anthropomorphic face. Each of the faces is defined by square heads with tapering bases, petite ears, circular eyes, rectangular eyes and lips, and projecting coiffures. Perhaps utilized as a weaver's advertisement panel (known as a "monstrario"), this is a fabulous example of ancient Peruvian artistry! Size: 4.375" W x 30.875" H (11.1 cm x 78.4 cm).
