Description:

Classical World, Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 300 BCE. This is a deep cotyla (cotyle) cup with twin horizontal turned handles at the rim. Overall black glazed and decorated with added yellow ochre, red and white stylized grape vines with highlights incised. The form is also known as a skyphos; the cotyla seems to have been a specific unit of measurement, but the form is that of a skyphos, a deep wine cup on a flanged base (there is some academic uncertainty over the exact names used for styles of pottery at this time). This is an example of Gnathian ware, distinguished by its colorful decoration applied directly to a deep black glaze on the surface of the vase. Size: 3" W x 6.5" H (7.6 cm x 16.5 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Peter Adler Collection, London, England 1980s.
