Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, Gnathia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A very fine olpe presenting a classic silhouette, with a thin-walled body, single tripartite handle, and a short, round, tiered concave foot, created in a pottery workshop in the Apulia region of southern Italy where potters were known for introducing additional pigments to the red-figure painting technique - in this case red, white, and peachy-orange. The elaborate decorative program on this example consists of a wide lower register featuring a leafy, floral vine - and above, a narrow band of abstract zigzag motifs alternating in red and peach with white highlights, followed by a narrow band of wave motifs in peach with white highlights. The rest of the body is finished in black glaze which boasts wonderful iridescence, save the narrow band in red at the juncture between the body and foot. Overall, a lovely example that demonstrates skillful technique and a refined polychromatic effect characteristic of Gnathia. Size: 3.75" W x 5.5" H (9.5 cm x 14 cm)
