Description:

Ancient Art. Etruria, central Italy, ca. 600 to 400 BCE. A pretty and well-made example of a bronze wine strainer. It has a long, flat handle with incised linear motifs that look like stylized leaves. At the end of the handle is a wide ring, perhaps for suspending the item when it was being stored. The bowl is shallow, with a thin rim that projects slightly over the edge of the bowl. A swirling, sun-like pattern of tiny perforations in the center of the bowl is the functional part of this gorgeous utensil. These items were used to filter out the sediment when serving wine, a crucial tool, especially for ancient methods of wine making. Size: 4.45" W x 9" H (11.3 cm x 22.9 cm); 10.95" H (27.8 cm) on included custom stand.
