Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. Very fine section of a limestone or hard plaster relief used as a sculptor's model. This was a common practice where an artist of the day would create trial pieces in softer material so he could use them for reference and perspective when sculpting a larger example out of a harder material like granite, limestone or marble. Interestingly, this still has a very old collection on the reverse. Framed in modern times on a shadow-box frame with heavy burlap-like fabric behind. Size: 3.125" W x 5" H (7.9 cm x 12.7 cm). Size: of frame 13.125" W x 16" H (33.3 cm x 40.6 cm)

Provenance: Private West Hollywood, California, USA collection, old collection on reverse shows it was once sold at N. Tano Antiquities Gallery, Cairo - probably around turn of the 19th/ 20th century.
