Description:

Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Woyo People, Kongo Kingdom, ca. 1st half of the 20th century CE. A carved wooden mask representing "Earth Spirits" - among the most important masks of the Woyo religious beliefs. Presenting a wide brow/forehead and a dramatically in contrast narrow jaw, the lower section is painted white. The interior shows nice patina, suggesting great ceremonial use over many years. Size: 7.625" W x 11.5" H (19.4 cm x 29.2 cm)

Masks like this example, called 'ndunga', are owned by the 'Bakama' secret society. With their performances, the 'ndunga masks' consolidate the power and authority of the 'earth spirits'.
