Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Finely carved from basalt or granite, a hand axe of a prone figural form depicting a flying shaman with a peaceful facial expression on his large ovoid head at one end, featuring coffee-bean shaped eyes, a pronounced nose, and a coffee bean shaped mouth - wearing a headdress or coiffure with a knotched pattern. The mid-section is textured showing repeating square nodes, and a curved blade is at the butt end. A very impressive form with some visible pecked areas. Size: 7" L (17.8 cm); 5.125" H (13 cm) on included custom stand.
