Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Protoclassic period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished brownware face mask of an ovoid form with stylized features including almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, a recessed mouth, and bar-shaped ears, all beneath a tall, rounded brow and furrowed eyebrows. Two small lateral piercings and one top piercing surround the face were perhaps used for attaching to a deceased individual, and pierced earlobes perhaps once held perishable ornamentation. Size: 2.75" L x 6" W x 7.6" H (7 cm x 15.2 cm x 19.3 cm); 9.25" H (23.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private British Columbia, Canada collection, gifted from aunt in Tucson, Arizona, USA, acquired prior to 1994

  • Condition: Professional repair and restoration along forehead and proper right ear, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and light fading to pigment, otherwise in great condition. Nice preservation to facial features.
