Description:

East Asia, China, Hongshan to Longshan Culture, Neolithic Period, ca. 3000 to 1900 BCE. This remarkable nephrite jade carving is substantial in size, featuring openwork with a symmetrical scrolling design and a pierced hole at its center for suspension. A distinctive type of jade artifact from the Neolithic era, it is commonly identified as a cloud or cloud-scroll pendant, typically with a flat, and somewhat rectangular or square profile. These pendants are usually carved on both sides, with polished grooves and dressings that follow the design's contours. Given its large form, this pendant was likely a funerary piece, they are often found placed near the head or chest of the deceased in tombs. While many attribute the design to cloud motifs, others suggest it may be inspired by reptilian or dragon forms - this particular pendant was even labeled as a double-headed dragon pendant due to its sinuous curves. Size: 8.75" L x 0.35" W x 4.25" H (22.2 cm x 0.9 cm x 10.8 cm)
