Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A spectacular textile panel is an example of openwork and slit-tapestry weaving techniques made from camelid (alpaca or llama) wool, featuring a deity with anthropomorphic features and animalistic limbs, flanked by serpents with bird registers. The technique used creates slits in the fabric at strategic points to allow for color changes and intricate designs. Chimu textiles were highly valued and used for various purposes, including clothing for the elite, ceremonial garments, and offerings to the gods. This panel has a finished upper edge and selvedge edges. Size: 31" L x 16" W (78.7 cm x 40.6 cm)
