Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. A fabulous musical whistling vessel comprised of 2 discoid chambers with a shaman figure atop one and a slender, tubular handle capping the other. Each chamber sitting upon a conical foot, the charming vessel is skillfully adorned in black and cream pigments, displaying lovely tondos of abstract striated and checkered designs on the circular sides of each chamber. The fascinating shaman stands with arms bent at the elbows and hands on his hips as he gazes forward from bulging, annular eyes above a pinched nose, and a smiling mouth. Like most shamans, he wears eccentric attire with a pair of horns protruding from the top of his head as huge annular earspools flank his face, a thick pectoral decorates his chest, a small loin cloth covers his groin, and a sizeable, conch instrument is strapped to his back. Elaborate face paint further accentuates his fascinating appearance. A slender, ribbon-form handle arches from his shoulder and ends at the spout atop the other chamber. Size: 7.7" L x 10" H (19.6 cm x 25.4 cm)
