Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Cauca Valley, Caldas Complex, ca. 1200 to 1400 CE. A lovely, hand-built terracotta figural vessel depicting a seated anthropomorphic figure with a flat base, a bulbous torso, a thick neck, and a cylindrical head with a top perforation. The red-orange body displays a pair of sinuous arms draped down to crossed legs, and a pair of perky breasts are situated among a ground of negative-resist cream, black, and orange geometric motifs. The head exhibits slit-form eyes, a bar-shaped nose, full lips, and cupped ears, with areas of black triangles filled with tan spots scattered across the face. Additional negative-resist decorations on the verso boast a stylized jaguar-spotted design, making this a wonderful and vibrant example! Size: 5.5" W x 8.125" H (14 cm x 20.6 cm).
