Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Mexico, Chihuahua, Casas Grandes (Paquime), ca. 1250 to 1475 CE. A Ramos polychrome pottery jar featuring a stylized anthropomorphic visage protruding in high relief on both sides. The janiform faces are identical, showcasing prominent noses, chins, ears, raised pupils, and rectangular mouths. The remainder of the jar is adorned with classic geometric patterns in polychrome red and black on a creamy white ground. A pair of holes is drilled into the rim on each side, possibly for suspension or securing a lid. Janus-faced jars from Casas Grandes, a powerful city in northern Mexico from the 13th to 15th centuries, were highly valued trade items. These ceramic vessels emphasized symmetry and featured standardized shapes, geometric patterns, and human or animal imagery, with some showcasing dual or multiple faces. The faces symbolized duality or multiplicity. Size: 6" Diameter x 5.75" H (15.2 cm x 14.6 cm)
