Description:

Ancient Near East, Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 6th to 9th century CE. A lovely cast-bronze bread stamp, in the form of a falling droplet with a rounded bottom and a tapered top. The stamp has a flat verso, squat walls, and a recessed stamp face with a quartet of raised Greek letters. An integral suspension loop on the verso houses one of three iron chain links, and on the end is a bronze ring. Fine green and brown patina have formed over each component. Size: 1.6" W x 2.5" H (4.1 cm x 6.4 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.
