Description:

Ancient Central Asia, Bactria, ca. 2500 to 2250 BCE. A lovely pair of jars carved from creamy yellow alabaster with flat bases, squat circular bodies, corseted shoulders, and discoid rims surrounding the shallow basins. Alabaster vessels have been found in high status tombs from Bactria. For example, in the ancient city of Ai Khanum, at the confluence of the rivers Kokcha and Oxus in modern day Afghanistan, several alabaster vessels were found in the tomb of Kineas, the founder of the city. Two fine examples from ancient Bactria! Size of largest: 2.75" W x 1.25" H (7 cm x 3.2 cm).

Provenance: The Dere Family Collection, New York, USA, assembled 1970's-2000's; ex-Khan Family Collection, New Jersey, USA, acquired in 1980's

  • Condition: Smaller vessel has restoration to small area of rim, with resurfacing over break lines. Both vessels have minor abrasions to bases, bodies, and rims, with light encrustations within. Light earthen deposits throughout. Old inventory label beneath base of smaller vessel.
