Eastern Europe, Hungary/Romania, Ostrogothic culture, ca. 6th century CE. A beautiful earring shaped from 73% silver depicting a highly stylized avian figure within a horseshoe-shaped border. The bird peers to the left with a single circular eye, holds both wings out at its sides, and has a keyhole-shaped body with a lengthy trapezoidal tail. The braided filigree border is capped on one end with a petite clasp loop and bears a parabolic 64% silver ear wire on the opposite terminal. Lustrous patina covers the earring and creates an attractive presentation. Size: 1.1" W x 1.2" H (2.8 cm x 3 cm); (w/ wire hoop): 1.9" H (4.8 cm); quality of silver: 73% for body and 64% for ear wire; total weight: 4.2 grams.

  • Condition: Loss to unattached end of suspension wire as shown. Very slight bending to overall form of earring and suspension wire, with light encrustations, and minor softening to some finer details. Nice patina throughout.
