Africa, Tanzania, 2nd half of 20th century CE. A finely executed fly whisk with a figural handle carved from hard wood, depicting a standing female with hands across her chest, her torso and mid-section covered with a strapless garment or wrap, and a ridged coiffure. The female figure surmounts a long and voluminous horse hair tail wrapped at the top with chocolate brown fabric / red and beige twisted cord "skirt". Wood is beautifully carved, remarkably smooth, and of a gorgeous deep brown with a lustrous surface. Size: 32" L (81.3 cm); figure measures 7" L (17.8 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private M. Wiley collection, New Jersey.
