Description:

Southeast Asia, northern Philippines, Luzon region, Ifugao people, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A fine rice-cutting knife with a crescent-shaped iron blade fitted inside the upper body of the hand-carved water buffalo horn body. The curved handle has an indented finger groove behind the cylindrical upper body that increases the comfortability of the grip, and an abstract anthropomorphic figure sits with retracted knees on top. Rice harvesters would wrap two fingers both above and below the blade to easily grip and sever the panicle of a rice stalk without damaging the lower stalk body. Size: 2.6" W x 9.5" H (6.6 cm x 24.1 cm); 9.7" H (24.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private northern California, USA collection; ex-Paul Harris collection
