Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Norton Sound, Yup'ik, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A superb example of a hunting hat made from bentwood birch bark molded into a conical shape with a wide front brim, a leather chin strap, and decorated with carved whale / marine mammal bone totemic charms. The brim shielded the wearer's eyes from the sun and the carvings honored the hunted animal spirits to ensure a successful hunt. Size: 15" L x 13" W x 9" H (38.1 cm x 33 cm x 22.9 cm)
