Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a fine cast-brass sculpture of Buddha wearing a kasaya robe while seated in a lotus position upon a tiered pedestal and cushion. He places his hands in the Bhumisparsha mudra, with his right hand over the right knee reaching towards the ground and the palm inward, while his left hand lies in his lap. This mudra represents the moment of his awakening, as Buddha defeated the demon Mara, and claimed the earth as witness to his enlightenment. He has a tranquil visage and characteristically long ears to represent the wealth of his previous life as Prince Gautama, stretched from wearing large earrings. Here he is shown after his enlightenment, as is evidenced by his large ushnisha, the pointed projection from the top of his head. The verso of the pedestal has a flat back and the underside reveals a hollow interior with remains of mortar and earthen deposits when the sculpture was placed in niche or shrine. Size: 8" L x 5.5" W x 11.75" H (20.3 cm x 14 cm x 29.8 cm)
