Description:

Latin America, Mexico, Spanish Colonia period, ca. 19th century CE. A fine example of a riding spur forged from iron, with a thick heel shank, dramatic rondel, and the original leather strap. The heel shank has U-shaped arms for encircling the rider's boot, decorated with studded rivets, open work, and inlaid nickel silver foliate and geometric motifs. The shank's tips have rectangular slits for the leather strap to pass through, securing the spur in place with the iron buckle. A thick neck extends from the shanks center - studded and incised with rope or braided patterns in nickel silver. The neck splits into two panels that are ornamented with punched openwork motifs. The spiked rondel is held in place between the panels by a rivet and rotates freely; there are over 20 spikes on this massive spur! Size: 8.5" L x 3.5" W (21.6 cm x 8.9 cm)

Wearing spurs was a status symbol to demonstrate horse ownership, only the wealthy could afford the animals and the spurs for riding. The larger spurs, such as this example, would certainly gain notice due to their size and jingling sound that accompanied the rider when riding or walking.
