Description:

East Asia, Japan, Edo period, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful carving of the Amitabha or Amida Nyorai Buddha upon an intricate pedestal before a large and ornate mandorla, made from wood and gilt. He stands atop a multi-tiered base- the back side is flat to fit flush against the wall of a shrine, the front edges covered with petite, repousse brass plates and carved with intricate relief flowers and meandering borders that support outspread petals and an amazing lotus blossom with petals slightly splayed below his feet. He wears a robe that covers both shoulders and arms, and low slung around his chest, cascading over the body as naturalistic drapery. His hands form mudra gestures to welcome and beckon to the faithful to follow. Upon his head is a characteristic coiffure shaped like a rounded protuberance, and a clear glass urna set into his forehead. Surrounding him is a large mandorla with rounded nodules that represent the swirling cloud during the "raigo," when Amida welcomes souls to paradise. Size: 11" L x 9" W x 30.5" H (27.9 cm x 22.9 cm x 77.5 cm)
