Description:

Europe, probably France, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A very fine carved white marble figure depicting a curvaceous female nude with a billowing cape falling behind her shoulders and draping across her right thigh and pubic area - its gilded sash extending across her left hip. The figure is shown with her chest swayed and arched slightly backwards, a weight shift onto her left leg with the right leg advanced at the hip, suggesting a rhythmic sense of motion characteristic of Art Nouveau. Size: 10" H (25.4 cm); 13.75" H (34.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Art Nouveau (New Art) was an important international art, architecture, and design movement that took its name from a Parisian shop called L 'Art Nouveau. It was known by this name in France, England, Belgium, Holland, and the United States - called Jugendstil in Austria and Germany (named for the magazine entitled Jugend "youth"), Modernismo in Spain, and Floreale in Italy.
