Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A fine cast-brass brazier or handwarmer with reticulating handles and an openwork lid to emit heat. This fine example has an ovoid, lobed shape, flat base, and a lobed rim that rests flush under an openwork lid with a floral vine motif pierced into the top. The double strap handles articulate to rest at the sides or to extend upwards when carrying the brazier. Before electricity and central heating, Chinese scholars, artisans, and officials needed to keep their hands warm during the winter when writing, practicing calligraphy, and painting - leading to the invention of these portable heaters. Hot coals were placed into the body and the thick brass radiated and conducted heat that could keep the user warm and was much safer than an open flame, especially when working with paper. The braziers could be very ornate, with precious enamel and gilding. Size: 8" L x 6.5" W x 4.25" H (20.3 cm x 16.5 cm x 10.8 cm)
