Description:

Africa, Congo Basin, central Africa, ca last quarter of 19th century. Carved wooden human figure swaddled in old textiles with glass/mirror eyes and mud/clay hair. Nkisis are an object in which the human spirit inhabits. Also called Minkisi, Minkisi and the afflictions associated with them are generally classified into two types; the "of the above" and the "of the below". The above minkisi are associated with the sky, rain, and thunderstorms. The below minkisi are associated with the earth and waters on land. The above minkisi were considered masculine and were closely tied to violence and violent forces.[9] The minkisi of the above were largely used to maintain order, serve justice, and seal treaties. The glass eyes of our example were used for divination enabling the Nkisis to see the spirit world in order to spy out its prey. A superb example! Size: 11" L x 3" W (27.9 cm x 7.6 cm)

All tribal examples have been vetted and are guaranteed authentic tribally used pieces and not tourist items.
