Description:

North Pacific, Hawaii, ca. 18th century CE. A remarkable bowl, skillfully hand-carved from taupe-hued basalt to present a cylindrical body comprised of 3 tiers. The wide rim flares outwards to surround a conical basin at the center. This lovely vessel was likely used as a mortar or lamp for burning betel nut oil. Size: 3.7" in diameter x 3.1" H (9.4 cm x 7.9 cm); 4.8" H (12.2 cm) on included custom stand.
