A well-preserved example of a gold 1 escudo coin from the Madrid Mint (mint mark crowned M, assayer MF), during the reign of the Spanish king Charles IIII (reigned 1788-1808). Obverse: bust of the king Charles IV surrounded by legend facing right. Reverse: the royal arms of Spain surrounded by legend. During the Spanish Colonial era, Spanish coins were very popular in the New World. They were also known as the gold doubloon and were minted in 1, 2, 4, and 8 escudo denominations. Size: 0.71" Diameter (1.8 cm); gold quality; 88.59% to 90.57% (equivalent to 21K+); weight: 3.3 grams
