Description:

Western Europe, France or England, Post-Medieval period, ca. 16th to 18th century CE. An unusual silver stamp seal with a pierced ring for suspension, cast from a high quality 83.75% silver. The circular seal face is cast with a scrolling vine and floral motifs around the central rosette. The overall style and arrangement are reminiscent of earlier Anglo Saxon designs that favor quatrefoil elements. The scalloped handle has a keyhole shaped perforation- while perhaps purely ornamental- in Roman times keys were worn as rings, which signaled the wearer was affluent enough to own valuables worth locking away, maybe the keyhole shape was a similar symbol of wealth. Size: 0.79" Diameter x 1.44" H (2 cm x 3.7 cm); silver quality: 83.75%; weight: 16.4 grams

Provenance: private Boynton Beach, Florida, USA collection; ex-private Norfolk, UK collection
