Description:

Pre-Columbian, Maya, possibly Guatemala, Late Classic Period, ca. 700 to 850 CE. A zoomorphic blackware cylinder vessel molded with a caiman or monstrous lizard dragon emerging from the front! Look at that dewlap and nose horn on this peculiar reptilian creature - a piercing through the snout also enabled separate ornament attachments. Monstrous beings of reptilian forms - serpents, lizards, and crocodiles permeate Maya art. Crocodilians are associated with sacrifices, the creation of the world, the births of some gods, and fertility. The Ochs Chan, the Bearded Dragon or Serpent of the Underworld, Imix (Cipactli) the crocodile god, and Zipacna a caiman-demon being - are just a few of the mythical beings this fierce monster could represent. The vessel comes with a replica lid. Size: 6.5" W x 10" H (16.5 cm x 25.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010
