Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Inca Empire, ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. A lovely earthy red monochrome vessel, featuring a rectangular body, a three-quarters stirrup handle, a long, cylindrical spout, and a seated anthropomorphic figure playing a flute. This figure has spindly legs and arms, a solid torso, and a relatively large head with wide staring eyes and a cap that sits atop his or her head. The flute is long and rectangular, held in both hands just below the mouth. Music was a crucial part of ceremonies and religious expression in the ancient Andes. Size: 4.75" W x 7.55" H (12.1 cm x 19.2 cm)
