Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, Macaracas type, ca. 600 to 1200 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery dish bearing a highly abstract parrot which may be a hybrid of various animals. Artists would create what some call "split representations" the image will represent more than one animal - here the parrot also looks very insectile - with what could be thought of as raptorial legs or antennae. The dish has a broad and shallow basin that rests on a small ring foot. The surface is slipped in beige that contrasts with the orange, purple, and black pigments, and the purple hue is indicative of the Macaracas style. Size: 8.5" Diameter x 1.75" H (21.6 cm x 4.4 cm)
